South Lake performer Rudi Palmela is our latest national champion.

The 14-year-old overcame both nerves and an injury sustained midway through his performance to claim first place in the speed tap category of the Showcase National Dance Championships on the Gold Coast recently.

“I was very shocked” he said.

“I couldn’t believe I achieved something so big

The effort was certainly no small feat.

The Showcase National Dance Championships are the biggest in the country, regularly drawing hundreds of entrants from across Australia.

But Rudi might never have followed a path into dance had his friend not brought dance shoes to school when he was seven years old.

Rudi was instantly hooked but his parents said they would only sign up if he agreed to stick it out for a full semester and if his education took priority

He obliged and now, seven years later, the Seton Catholic College student is a national champion

His father Paulo said the win was an incredible moment and reward for the hours of dedication spent honing his skills each week.

“I’m a massive football fan, that’s my passion” he said.

“When Rudi came to us and said he wanted to take up dance, I was a bit unsure.  But you can’t pressure kids to do something they don’t want to do.  When he was up on stage it was like, WOW.  It was great.”

Rudi, who trains at Dynamite Dance in Rockingham, will turn his attention to a local dance competition in April.
